Chapter Thirty

It was hard for Liv to walk through the crowded casino in Las Vegas, knowing that out in the world, horrible things were happening. She wanted to yell at the drunks pulling on slot machines that Father Time was missing! She felt the need to throw the chips on the high roller tables into the gamblers’ faces, telling them that they were in danger simply by being mortal. And then there were those filling their faces with food, who she wanted to smack, but mostly just because they were gorging on food that she really wanted to eat but didn’t have the time for.

She chomped off a bite of one of the protein bars Rudolf had sent her to try, chewing it without tasting. Right then, she didn’t care for the milk chocolate or flaky coconut or crispy oats. She just needed the sustenance to keep up her magical reserves.

Tasting something that wasn’t right, Liv stopped, picking something from her teeth. “Oh, gross. Are those dried peas?” She shook her head, making a mental note to talk to Rudolf about his ingredient choices after all the mortal threats were over, which, if she didn’t act fast, might be never.

Liv sped all the way to the top of the Cosmopolitan Casino on the Las Vegas Strip, not slowing until she got to the king’s chamber. As they had become accustomed to doing, the guards allowed her entry immediately.

She hustled through the doors, ready to fill Rudolf in about the horror that had befallen the world, but she was stopped by a wad of confetti that exploded in her face upon entering the chambers.

Rudolf threw up his hands, his mouth wide, a paper party hat on his head. “Yay!”

Liv blew out a breath, realizing that pieces of paper were covering her head and face. She tried to regain her composure.

“Wow, that was fast!” Rudolf exclaimed. “I just sent you the announcement like two minutes ago.”

Liv realized that her chest was rising and falling rapidly. She brushed off her face and shook her head. “What are you talking about?”

“The invite,” Serena answered, stepping up beside Rudolf, wrapping her arms around his waist, and pulling him in tightly. She was also wearing a dumb party hat.

“Again, I realize you all think that answers my question, but it doesn’t,” Liv stated, feeling her temper rising.

“The. Invitation. To. Celebrate,” Rudolf said, articulating each word.

Liv lowered her chin. “Celebrate what?”

The two looked at each other and laughed. Then they halted. Looked at Liv and laughed again. “The announcement of our pregnancy.”

Not expecting this, Liv’s mouth fell open. She tried to shake her head, to dispel their happiness and tell them why she was there, but she couldn’t bring herself to do it. Instead, despite the heartbreak in her chest, she bounded forward, wrapping her arms around both of their necks and pulling them in. “This is great news! Congratulations! I’m so happy for you.”

“We’re excited too,” Serena said when Liv released her. “It came as quite a shock since we’d tried every single fertility trick and it didn’t work.
